Ever looking to find a work home from job, at your own schedule, that has the potential to replace a full time job, and feed your family? Being a Food Photographer, can be that for you! I was recommend by a blogger friend, where one can make money by photographing recreation of recipes, or developing recipes for food bloggers.
Most food bloggers, do not create those photos on their blogs, they hire food photographers! Are food photographers needed in an AI world? YES!! As, I just read this article titled Bakers Beware , where an experienced baker who was trying to make some cute chocolate strawberries that looked like acorns, but even after 5 hours of trying, realized she it was impossible to create an AI recipe, that was too perfect beyond looking perfection.
It does drive me crazy, to see so many people fall for the fake AI recipe photographs. I have seen an AI cupcake, with the bite taken out of the wrapper, and many comment, that they need the recipe. It doesn't exist!
I enrolled in the Pretty Focused Food Photography Course back in May, 2020, and also took some of their masterclasses, in food styling and Selling exclusives recipes in 2021. One doesn't have to know how to use a mirrorless/dslr camera, as you will be taught how to use it. The outline of the course has these components. Camera Basics, Styling and Composition, Photographing Recipes, Adobe Lightroom, Working for Bloggers, Portfolio Requirements and submissions, Setting up your business, with added bonuses and Q&A's.
Enrollment opens up monthly, and spaces are limited. There is a 7 day trial, and signing up for the full course, also comes with a 30 day money back guarantee. The course is self paced, with exercises, videos and homework. I have seen the course, be updated with new information, with changing technology of mirrorless cameras, and new modules to improve on. I have seen classmates graduate, and step down from their corporate jobs, and thrive! There is some initial expenses, like a table, table top backdrops (that you can make your own), a larger reflector. The joy of prop hunting, and finding colour and textured linens, buying dishes, and the hunt of unique kitchen props, which is a fun treasure hunt for me, that I love....facebook marketplace, garage sales, antique stores, and home goods/winners...a gal can never have too many cute measuring cups, right?! It also got me on a sour dough bread band wagon.
My photographs are improving, the food is the focus.
One does put a lot of time into practicing, and photographing recipes from start to finish. The expectation is to do at least 15 recipes sessions, before you start on your portfolio, that needs to be passed by a coach, to graduate, and then you get placed into a buyers group. There are over 1200 graduates...and you can set your acceptance of what you like to create. Most of the google recipes, you see, are most likely Pretty Focused Graduate students! When Bloggers invest in a food photographs, a recipe may pay $350 USA, and those improved photographs, will improve the attention span of the readers on their blog. The coaches and the community will help you along the way. It also applies to those that create crafts for bloggers, as the same principles apply!
I haven't finished the course to present a full portfolio, ...but I did make my money back that I have invested in by hiring my very first food client, as I was already an established photographer. I have in the past few years, gone from canon dslr, to a nikon mirrorless, and its now like learning how to use a new camera with its features. It is a steeper learning curve, but with persistence, it is worth it. With experience, it may take up to 4 months, but most graduated within a 6 month commitment. There is a Pretty Focused Roadmap and sign up here for Open Enrollment.
I have also invested in continuous light, (I already had studio lighting) as one day I hope to get more into videoing, and they have a masterclass on food videos that I think would make a great addition to anyone that loves creating recipes. All coaches, have gone through the program. The masterclasses can only sign up after that initial course investment. I love cooking and baking, but I still can't pipe icing on a cupcake! The food always looks delicious, and its so hard to resist, as I photograph! My life got busier at the time, and went entirely in a different direction; but I still have access and whenever I want to go back to it, it is right there waiting for me when I feel I want to have more food and need more consistent clients, with updated modules, and a loving and supportive community that is waiting! I do often casually check into the exclusive facebook group, and help support those on their journey in food photography! Hope you do consider joining or at least get on the wait list, as its a wonderful supportive group, that is rare in so many other type of courses that are offered.
Check out more of my photographs and recipes on my friend's blog. She was the the one to recommend the course to me, at Brooklyn Berry Designs
